ISO 9241-11 and ISO 13407 are two important standards related to usability: the former one provides the definition of usability and the latter one guidance for designing usability. We carried out an interpretative analysis of ISO 13407 from the viewpoint of the standard definition of usability from ISO 9241-11.

New ISO usability standard defines “user experience”. According to Tom Stewart, the new version of ISO 13407, the International Standard for Human Centred Design (which will be called ISO 9241-210 to bring it into line with other usability standards), will use the term “user experience”.

ISO 13407 aims to help those responsible for managing hardware and software design processes to identify and plan effective and timely user-centred design activities. It complements existing design approaches and methods.

In summary, ISO 13407 provides quite clear guidance of what should be produced: descriptions of different users. The standard, however, does not provide much descriptions of the challenge of how to identify the different users. This is a shortcoming because the identification of different users and categorization of them into appropriate user groups is not a trivial thing.
